Privacy

This site sets no cookies and has no accounts, forms or comments. It loads one third-party script, Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts page views without identifying visitors.

Information collected

The site provides no means of submitting information. There is no form, login, comment field or upload. The search box filters a list already on the page in the browser; what is typed in it is not sent anywhere.

Page views are counted using Cloudflare Web Analytics. It records that a page was viewed, the approximate region of the request, the browser and device type, and the referring site where one exists. This is the only measurement on the site.

The analytics script sets no cookie, stores nothing in the browser, performs no device fingerprinting and assigns no identifier. It cannot associate visits with each other or with activity on other sites. No advertising network is involved.

The resulting data is held by Cloudflare under their privacy terms. It is not sold, shared or combined with other data.

Host processing

The site is served by Cloudflare, which processes requests in order to serve them and to protect the service from abuse. This normally includes the IP address, the page requested, the time of the request and the browser user agent. This occurs at the infrastructure layer. A search query is kept in the address of the search page, so it reaches the host only when that address is loaded, as part of the page requested.

The chart images under /embed/ are for placing on other sites. When a page elsewhere displays one, the reader's browser requests it from this site's host, which processes the request in the same way, including the referring site where the browser sends it. The images contain no script and set no cookie, and no analytics count them.

Cloudflare also asks browsers to report failed requests, which allows a host to detect outages. Successful page views are not reported by this mechanism, and these reports are not visible to this site.

Cloudflare's retention periods are governed by Cloudflare's privacy policy.

Browser storage

This site writes no cookies. Until a theme is chosen, pages follow the browser's appearance setting, which is read in the browser and not recorded. The theme control in the header stores one value in the browser's local storage, the chosen theme, so that the choice applies on every page. It is read only by this site's pages in that browser and is never sent anywhere. Clearing site data removes it. Browsers cache pages and fonts according to their own settings.

Assets

Fonts are served from this domain. The site's pages display no images, embedded video, social widgets or tag managers. Apart from the analytics script named above, all resources are served from this domain, and the content security policy blocks scripts from any other origin.

The site's own code includes four scripts. One, on every page, applies the theme choice described under browser storage. One, on the datacentre map, zooms the map with the mouse wheel and pans it by dragging. One, on the search page, filters the list as a query is typed and writes the query into the page address. One, on the home page, changes the map's period as its control is dragged. The last three store nothing. None sends anything.

External links

The site links extensively to third-party pages, which are subject to their own privacy practices. Links to sources carry no tracking parameters.

Data about third parties

The published data describes countries, organisations, models, legal instruments and aggregate populations. Individuals appear only where already named in a cited public record, such as the author of a paper or the publisher of a government document. No personal data about readers is held.

Rights

Australian privacy law and the GDPR confer rights over personal information. The analytics described above do not identify individuals, so no record held here relates to an identifiable reader. Requests concerning personal information may be made through the corrections page.

A content blocker or browser tracking-protection setting will prevent the analytics script loading. The site functions identically without it.

Changes

Changes to this policy are published here and the date above is updated. Changes affecting what is collected are also listed on the corrections page.
